What are wisdom teeth?

The third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are the last teeth to come through and grow at the back of the gums. Most people grow four wisdom teeth during their late teens or early twenties, one in each corner of the mouth.

It can often happen that there isn’t enough room left in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to grow, as by this time the other 28 adult teeth are usually already in place. This can cause the wisdom teeth to emerge at an angle or get stuck and only partially emerge. Wisdom teeth that grow through in this manner are known as impacted wisdom teeth.

Kinds of impacted wisdom teeth

Depending on the way the tooth has grown through, there can be different kinds of impacted wisdom teeth.

  • Mesial Impaction – The wisdom tooth grows at an angle facing towards the front of the mouth
  • Vertical Impaction –  The wisdom tooth is straight but is stuck against the tooth next to it, preventing it from breaking through the gums properly.
  • Horizontal Impaction – The wisdom tooth grows horizontally.
  • Distal Impaction – The wisdom tooth grows away from the neighboring tooth and becomes stuck in that position.

Why might I need wisdom teeth extraction?

Impacted wisdom teeth or wisdom teeth that have not fully broken through the surface of the gum can cause wisdom tooth pain and other dental problems.

Food can become trapped around the edge of the wisdom tooth, creating a build-up of plaque, which can lead to tooth decay, infection, gum disease, and other dental problems.

If you are experiencing wisdom teeth pain you should schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. As with all dental problems, it is important to visit your dentist as soon as possible.

We provide an Emergency Dental Care Service if you are experiencing severe Wisdom Teeth Pain.

In cases where the wisdom teeth are impacted but there is no disease present, we advise not to remove the wisdom teeth as there is no proven benefit in removing healthy wisdom teeth, and patients shouldn’t be exposed to the possible risks unless the extraction is necessary.

Wisdom teeth removal recovery

After your wisdom teeth extraction, it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort, both inside and outside your mouth. This is normally for around three days, but it can last for as long as two weeks.

You may also experience a stiff jaw and some facial bruising for up to two weeks.

Possible complications

Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure and as with all surgery, there are associated risks. One possible complication is ‘dry socket’, where the patient experiences a dull, aching sensation in the gum or jaw and possibly a bad taste or smell emanating from the empty tooth socket.

You are more likely to experience dry socket if you fail to follow the after-care instructions given to you by your dentist following your wisdom teeth removal.
